Evermine 03:30
She charts a scattered course of guess She puts her faith in nothing less Than God and hope and hopelessness The mess of time keeps her on a broken line And though my eyes will follow closely She disappears The more she flaps her wings around The more she falters without sound But as she’s tattooed on the ground now I want to captivate her To hold and suffocate her To pin her down and keep her paralized Petrified Always before my eyes Kept like a valentine Held in time Evermine

Spilled out from the nest Of your feathery throne From one summer’s dream To a winter unknown Burning the bridges That your heart trails behind When you leave you can never go home How do you sleep When the pillow’s alive With the whispers of childhood The buzz of the hive When the lust dies to wander When you’re tired and alone When you leave you can never go home When the home-service beckons with crackles in code Or the sound of your mother-tongue spilled on the road When the angels on motorbikes pick up the slack Like Orpheus son you must never look back The faces you’ve known Will be strange to the touch The bricks of your dreams Corroded to dust The rust of your memories Now polished to chrome Well when you leave you can never go home They say when you leave you can never go home It’s true when you leave you can never go home

Misty Roses 03:28
You look to me like Misty Roses Too soft to touch You’re too lovely to leave alone If I could be like misty roses I’d love you much You’re too lovely to leave alone Flowers often cry But too late to find That their beauty has been lost With their peace of mind You look to me like love forever Too good to last But too lovely not to try If I believe in love forever I’d forget the past You’re too lovely not to try You look to me like misty roses

Shade 03:38
In days when the heat brings a halt to all life And the sun stretched out over fields of ploughed lines And clutched to his heart the speechless vines When the reapers were slayed by the harvest strife Crushed grass beneath bodies laying crucified Alone, upstanding in those days of dust and fire Dragged down by the Earth but refusing to tire Deafenned by crickets and the cries that they made I searched for your heart like I searched for shade

Beauty Lies 03:56
From gold to grey Silk turns to leather Pride becoming envy Charm makes way for vanity Well the weather has worn Childbirth has torn Gravity pulled you down to earth by your skin Beauty lies From passion to weariness Love to duty Lust turns to betrayal Adoration now charity Well you can walk hand in hand with time Or stop and be trampled by those that walk behind Beauty lies Well your shadow is cast by the light of an era gone by When flashlight reflected your sparkle in every man's eye But the spotlight turns dim and the crowd turns away When your youthful commodities crash on the rocks of old age And Beauty dies They spoiled you Now you’re spoiled Once pampered Now needy From dawn to twighlight Youth to reality Well youth is beauty Beauty is youth But don’t you go confusing beauty with truth ‘Cause beauty lies

With your gossamer heart Your translucent eyes Your Rizla thin skin Your filligree mind You poor flightless angel Earthbound by these things You won’t ever learn how to fly ‘Til you give me your wings With your blue vein breast The white of your thigh Your wind-blown lips The pink of the sky The Ivory veil of your skin tightly clings But you won’t ever learn how to fly ‘Til you give me your wings ‘Til you give me your wings I’ll wait like a loaded spring Like a taut wound spring I’ll wait ’til you give me your wings

Words on the tip of finger Spread across medium-sliced lines Sentences hover and linger Freed from the reason that binds Gathering leaves, scattering seeds Hoping that you will find The flowers that punctuate freedom The seconds that syncopate time To the scream of a life-support failing Comes the beat of a hand on a heart And the piercing shrill of death wailing Comes to a halt with a start There on the screen Who’d have believed Life could imitate art But I swear it’s your handwriting in red neon There on the life-support chart The blinds that are closed against morning Glow like the lines on a page Postponing eventual dawning Of the sun in a violent rage Touching the blind, disturbing lines Hoping that you will find The flowers that punctuate freedom The seconds that syncopate time

There are those with hearts so large You can enter without knocking There are those with hearts so large That you only see the half There are those with hearts so frail It could shatter with a touch There are those with hearts too frail to live like you and I With flowers in their eyes The eyes that bloom with fear For fear they’ll miss the hour That leads them to their dreams There are those with hearts so tender That the fieldmouse nests inside There are those with hearts too tender Half human and half saint There are those with hearts so vast That you’ll never see the end There are those with hearts too vast They deprive themselves of dreams With flowers in their eyes The eyes that bloom with fear For fear they’ll miss the hour That leads them to their dreams There are those with hearts so open That they can’t help but reveal The heart so unprotected The heart that’s born to serve See him there his heart so open And so tender and so frail Cursed be those empty branches That will never bend to know The flowers in their eyes The eyes that bloom with fear For fear they’ll miss the hour That leads them to their dreams

The valentines we send each other Year on year are just a cover Witness to an ever-growing fear That Cupid who we fed and flourished Will fall to earth now undernourished And love’s young dream will fade and disappear When words we want to hear Are not enough to keep us near When we tear the jagged arrows from our hearts When our Eden turns to bramble When our paradise is lost When we’ve given up the ghost I wonder who hurts the most Scoring points against each other Throw a line then run for cover Turn and view the ruins from afar Kisses sharpenned to precision Softenning each small incision Skin on skin and scar on healing scar When flowers take the place of a penitent embrace When the day betrays the secrets of the night When our Eden turns to bramble When our paradise is lost When we’ve given up the ghost I wonder who hurts the most Each twisted word a thorn Each silence a crimson tear In a heart that wakes each dawn And breaks before the dying of the day

I never said a word Not even under my breath I didn’t even think it I don’t know what you’ve heard I know the rumours abound The wind spreads them around But I swear I’m not cheating I wouldn’t even know how To abate your suspicions know You won’t know if it’s bait ’til they reel in the line And at the end of the day Do you want to believe what I say Or do you just want to sing a song of goodbye The sky is falling down I smell thunder in the air Somewhere the clouds are burning There’ll be no rainbows here You sow the seeds of doubt And once the flowers are out You know there’ll be no returning This is no place for denial This is the sentence without a trial My story’s the same if I’m open or lie So I’ll just pack up my case And stare my fate straight in the face And smile as I sing a song of goodbye So sing a song of loneliness Sing a song of weariness Sing along with tears in your eyes Sing a song with hope in it Not a sour note in it Sing as though you’re singing goodbye Sing a song of leaving sing a song of grieving Sing while looking fear in the eye Sing something simple Sing something sinful Sing oh sing a song of goodbye Goodbye

about

Here's an album I am particularly proud of: 'Evermine'. Having written the first album over a number of years, this second album was written very quickly, in fact the bulk of it was written during two weeks recovering from an emergency operation that was carried out immediately on my return from our first tour of Europe. Thinking I had over-indulged and was just paying the price, I had spent the hour before our last gig in Berlin with my head in the fridge, turns out I was very ill and it wasn't self-inflicted. These songs were written knowing just what the band were capable of and for the most part were written in my head without the constraints of my basic guitar playing, but Barkley's musical nous lifted the songs to a higher plane. Thrilled from my success with the Brel song that was on the first album, we attempted another two French songs here, and a Tim Hardin cover. Rehearsed and recorded in a week in a small studio in Hackney. Tim Charlton's mix made this sound like gold.
